The Painted Girls

Little Dancer, Aged Fourteen

Little Dancer Aged Fourteen

My second novel, The Painted Girls, has sold at auction in the US to Sarah McGrath (edited A Thousand Splendid Suns, The Ten Year Nap) at Riverhead/Penguin and in Canada to Iris Tupholme (edited Room, The Book of Negroes) at Harper Collins.

Set in 19th-century Paris and based on historical events and characters, The Painted Girls is the story of teenaged sisters whose father’s death sets one on a trajectory to the Paris Opera Ballet to become the model for Degas’s sculpture “Little Dancer Aged 14″ and the other into the stage adaptation of Emile Zola’s novel L’Assommoir and into the arms of a dangerous young man. Set during a time of profound artistic, cultural and scientific ferment, The Painted Girls is ultimately a tale of two remarkable girls coming of age under conditions that render them uniquely vulnerable to the darker impulses of “civilized society.”
